Every year, Katherine Johnson PTA members elect the officers who lead our PTA. Here’s how our elections work, based on our PTA bylaws. Any member can be nominated, and every member has a vote!
🗳️ Officer elections are held each March at the PTA election meeting. Watch our Upcoming Events page and newsletters for the date, time and location.

How Elections Work
A nominating committee is elected
At a membership meeting before the March election, members elect a nominating committee of 5 members and 2 alternates. The PTA president can’t serve on or appoint anyone to this committee, and members can’t serve two terms in a row.
The committee recommends one candidate per office
The committee considers all nominations, may look for additional candidates, and only considers eligible members who have agreed to serve if elected. It then selects one name for each office.
The slate is shared at least 7 days ahead
The nominating committee’s report (the slate of candidates) is shared through regular PTA channels at least seven days before the election meeting.
Nominations from the floor
At the election meeting, the committee’s report is read, and members may also nominate candidates from the floor.
Members vote
Officers are elected in order by ballot. If there is only one nominee for an office, that person is elected by acclamation (no ballot needed).
Who Can Vote
Voting
- Only current PTA members may make motions, debate and vote.
- There is no proxy voting. You must be present to vote.
- The election meeting is held in person. It can’t be held virtually.
- At least 10 members must be present (a quorum) to hold the vote.
Meetings Are Open to All
Anyone in our school community is welcome to attend PTA membership meetings. Only members can vote, so be sure your membership is current for the school year (August 1–July 31).
Who Can Run for Office
To serve on the executive board, a person must:
- Support the mission, purposes and policies of National PTA and Texas PTA
- Be a member of this PTA (within 30 days of the start of the membership year, or of their election)
- Not have served more than two consecutive terms in the same position
- Receive no pay from the PTA, other than reimbursement for reasonable expenses
- Not be employed by or under contract to the PTA
- Serve in only one position (co-chairs aren’t allowed)
Members under 18 can’t serve as president, first vice president, secretary or treasurer. The PTA president also can’t serve as a council PTA president at the same time, or hold or announce candidacy for the local school board while serving.
